How to Set Up Google Analytics for Your Shopify Store
Google Analytics is a vital tool for any Shopify store owner who wants to track website performance, monitor customer behavior, and boost conversions. It's easy. Here's how!
Step 1: Create or Log into Your Google Analytics Account
Before you can connect Google Analytics to your Shopify store, you’ll need a Google Analytics account.
Go to Google Analytics.
Sign in using your Google account (or create one if you don’t have one).
If this is your first time setting up Google Analytics, click Start measuring.
Enter a Property Name (like your Shopify store name) and set your time zone and currency.
Click Create to generate your new property.
Step 2: Obtain Your Google Analytics Tracking ID
Once you’ve created your Google Analytics property, you’ll need the Tracking ID to integrate it into your Shopify store.
In Google Analytics, click on the Admin gear icon at the bottom left.
Under the Property column, click Tracking Info > Tracking Code.
Here, you’ll see your Tracking ID, which will look something like UA-XXXXXXXXX-X (for Universal Analytics) or G-XXXXXXXXXX (for Google Analytics 4). Copy this ID, as you’ll need it for the next step.
Step 3: Add Your Google Analytics Tracking ID to Shopify
Now, let’s add that tracking ID to your Shopify store:
Log in to your Shopify Admin.
Go to Settings > Online Store > Preferences.
Scroll down to the Google Analytics section.
Paste your Tracking ID into the Google Analytics account field.
If you’re using Google Analytics 4 (GA4), make sure to check the box that says Use Enhanced Ecommerce to enable e-commerce tracking.
Save your changes by clicking the Save button at the bottom.
Step 4: Enable Enhanced E-commerce Tracking
To get more detailed insights into your store's sales data, enable Enhanced E-commerce tracking. This feature helps you track actions such as product views, add-to-carts, and completed purchases.
In the Preferences section of your Shopify admin (where you added your Tracking ID), scroll to the Google Analytics section.
Check the box for Use Enhanced Ecommerce.
Click Save to apply these changes.
Step 5: Verify Your Google Analytics Installation
After adding your Tracking ID, it’s time to make sure everything is working properly.
Open your Shopify store in a new browser window or tab.
Go to Google Analytics > Real-Time > Overview.
You should see activity being tracked in real-time as you browse your store.
If you don’t see any activity, give it some time, and make sure the Enhanced Ecommerce feature is enabled in Google Analytics.
Step 6: Start Analyzing Your Data
With Google Analytics now set up, you can begin monitoring valuable insights such as:
Traffic sources: See where your visitors are coming from (organic search, paid ads, etc.).
User behavior: Understand how visitors are navigating your store.
Conversion tracking: Track how many visitors complete purchases and how they interact with your product pages.
To access this data, log in to your Google Analytics account and explore the various reports under the Acquisition, Behavior, and Conversions tabs.
Final Thoughts
Adding Google Analytics to your Shopify store is a quick and effective way to track your store’s performance and customer behavior. By utilizing Google Analytics’ reporting tools, you can gain valuable insights to optimize your store and grow your business.
Now you’re ready to take advantage of the data that can help you make smarter decisions and increase conversions!
